Dualism is an attractive philosophy with an Achilles’ heel. Mind and body seem to be fundamentally separate things, yet dualists since Descartes have never been able to solve the famous problem of interaction. If mind and body are in different ontological categories, then how could they possibly interact with each other, even in principle?
Bravo, a clear and interesting piece, and I very much agree that talking about information is crucial when discussing these issues.
One thing I'd like to point out is that the concept of information can be a bit iffy, since it seems to be hard to separate from mind (and nobody has come up with a naturalistic definition). Causality itself seems to be a human construct as well, although not an a priori one as Kant thought. So as always, many questions remain.
I like to think of the universal function linking input to output as a sort of abstraction, or meta principle, but whose substance still needs to be filled in -- which points in the direction of a mind rather than *just* an equation.
It is a good starting point. You point to connection of the Mind and Matter. I will tell you your blind spots. I'll write full ideas as a replies to this comment, but this is the overview:
1. Defining Mind
2. Defining Matter
3. Why Mind and Matter have the same structure
4. Mind (Consciousness) is primary
5. Matter is created from the Mind (Consciousness)
This is just a starting point, if you are interested we can talk much deeper.
We know that something Exists by measurement and observations. But we can measure or observe only information sent from the object that is not their present moment. For example, we see the Sun, but the Sun had experienced 8 more minutes since that ray of light was emitted. When we measure or observe something, we observe information from the past. With that we can say that Matter is the past information that is measured.
When we observe an object, we observe the light that came from the object to our eyes. Based on the distance in the space, there is also a distance in time. Because of that we use the Light-year as a measurement of the distance in space. So when we see the object, we see the information of the past state of that object. But for that object to exist, it needs to exist in the Present Moment.
The rules of interaction are rules of the physics (laws), and they are Gravitational, Electromagnetic, Strong Nuclear, and Weak Nuclear.
And particles receive Information with those rules from the rest of the universe.
"Consciousness" is the Awareness itself. It is the Observer behind our eyes. But the most important property is that the Consciousness is always in the Present moment. It is the present moment that never passes and is always here. There is no Consciousness in the past or future it is NOW. The only difference form Consciousness and the present moment is that, in our language, we define the present moment as the information that we experienced.
"Information" is everything that you perceive, think, feel, imagine, touch, see... "include mental stuff as well – feelings, experiences, qualia, etc.". We talked about the Present moment, and how it doesn't change. The change that happens, is the change of the information. Ergo the time itself is property of the Information.
"→" are all the rules of the information. Like a grammar or a law of physics. As humans, we have medium of sight, touch, smell, taste, feeling, taught... (Our taught is just a mental simulation of the senses)
Your mistake is that you think there is such a thing a "mind" and mental states. The concept of mind is a new concept. The word wasn't even used until around 1200 AD. Read Gilbert Ryle's, The Concept of Mind, and Szasz's The Meaning of Mind. They'll blow your mind ;)
